Luddites Books & Wine is proud to present to you our UNNATURALLY GOOD WINES, though some of them are, in fact, natural wines. These will have a star next to their name.

BY THE GLASS

*natural wines

WHITE

*Trocken Grüner Veltliner / Meinklang / 100% Grüner Veltiner / Burgenland, AT / €6

This dry, easy-drinking wine is an Austrian classic and an absolute must try for anyone interested in the growing world of Austrian wines. On the palate you'll have crisp notes of green apple, peach, and just a touch of white pepper. It is such a perfect expression of Grüner Veltliner that you won't even notice it is vegan natural wine.

*Esch Hab Di Garn /Rohrer/ Gewürtraminer & Auxerrois / Mittelbergheim, FR / €6,5

Feeling adventurous? Alsacian for "I love you," this unfiltered wine is a blend dominated by the above two grapes with just a little Riesling and Muscat, all of which have been hand-picked. The wine is lively on the palate, with notes of ripe pear, and is all around a fresh and funky wine.

RED

*Récolte 2019/ Julienas / 100% Gamay / Julienas, FR / €7

Gamay gets a bad rep because of cheap, commercial beaujolais producers who sweeten their wines, but this medium-light bodied, dry red is a great example of a quality one, and is the perfect red wine to pair with a summer's day.

Pinot Noir 2018 / Wijndomein Aldeneyck / 100% Pinot Noir / Maasvallei Limburg, BE / €7

Ever had a red wine from Belgium? The microclimate of this region allows for this beautiful example of Pinot Noir--a notoriously difficult grape to grow--which has been aged in new oak barrels to add just a hint of cream to it.

Gipskeuper Bonnigheim / Weingut Dautel / 100% Lemberger (Blaufränkisch) / Württemberg, DE / €7,5

Lemberger is not very well known, but it is the German version of the Austrian Blaufräkisch, and has an elegant balance of acidity and tannins; on the palate you'll get notes of ripe red fruit, with just a touch of smokiness and a hint of spice.

Orange

*Terroirists/ Plageoles / Muscadelle Blend (7 indigenous grapes)  / Gaillac, France / €7,5

Feeling funky? This orange wine, which uses only grapes native to the Gaillac area (southwestern France), macerates for 11 days on the grape skins, making the wine more tannic and textured while still preserving its notes of fresh, fleshy fruit. The use of indigenous grapes, long maceration period, and completely organic practices means you'll really taste the terroir of this interesting corner of France.

Back in Stock 23 September

*Tète Orange / Les Tètes / Chenin, Colombard, Mauzac Rose, Muscadelle / Loire, FR / €6,5

For a limited time only, try this natural, orange wine from Loire that even faintly tastes like oranges.

Rosé

Rosé Brut 2017 / Vaux / Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc & Chardonnay / Rheingau, DE / €7

A sparkling, dry, and refreshing rosé with aromas of wild strawberries from a storied vineyard in Germany that has been producing sparkling wines ("sekt" in German) since 1868. It is simply an unparalleled aperitif.

*Maceration 2020 / Charles Frey / Pinot Gris & Sylvaner / Alsace, FR / €7

Anything but your typical rosé, this unfiltered blend of Pinot Gris and Sylvaner has no sulfites added, and spends eight days in maceration, giving us this dry, tannic, slightly sour, and yeasty rosé.

Sparkling

Rheingauer Réserve / Vaux / 100% Riesling / Rheingau, DE / €8

When you think of sparkling wines you don't usually think of Rieslings, but the Rheingau area is famous for them and Vaux is committed to the traditional craftsmanship, so the result is this elegant, single-vineyard sparkling Riesling which combines a robust acidity with a stony minerality.

Rosé Brut 2017 / Vaux / Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc & Chardonnay / Rheingau, DE / €7

*A quick note about natural wines: natural wines are not simply organic. Generally, the term is applied to vineyards who reject today’s sophisticated winemaking technology, and seek to produce wine in the same manner they did a century ago.  This means the yeast they use tends to be wild, sulfites are usually not added, and the vineyard’s environmental impact is minimal.
