BY THE GLASS

*Natural Wines

White

Silvaner 2020 / Schloss Schönberg / 100% Silvaner / Hessische Bergstrasse, DE / €6

The tiny German wine region of Hessiche Bergstrasse is nestled up against  Odenwald mountains enclosed by the Rhine, Main, and Neckar rivers, which serve as natural heat reservoirs and allow for long growing seasons, in turn producing this dry, medium-light bodied wine with a generous amount of acidity, a touch of minerality, and flavors of orange peel and cinnamon.

Tantaka Blanco / Juanjo Tellaetxe / 100% Ondarrabi Zuri / Txakoli De Alava, ES / 8

This grape is native to the Arrastaria valley, in the Basque region, where winemaker Juanjo Tellaetxe uses winemaking techniques that are 150 years old and were largely lost to time. This bone-dry white wine has a salty acidity that is typical in wines from the area, and which is somewhat countered by the notes of ripe fruit and long finish.

*Champetre Blanc / Laurent Cazottes/ 100% Mauzac / Gaillac, FR / €6,5

Mauzac is a very old white grape, that is widely unknown outside the Languedoc-Rousillon region, its native home. It is also reportedly the first grape ever to be made into sparkling wine (by accident, of course). Don’t let its obscurity fool you: it is worth exploring for its peachy taste and green apple skin aromas.

Pinot Grigio / Schiopetto / 100% Pinot Grigio / DOC Collio, IT / €9

This fuller-bodied, juicy Pinot Grigio from Fruili is a crowd favorite. Mario Schiopetto was a pioneer in the wine world, known for releasing the first modern white wine from Fruili back in 1965. In this classic Italian staple, you’ll notice the slight aroma of bananas on the nose and a layered taste on the palate.

Red

*Nouvelle Lune 2020 / Rohrer / 100% Pinot Noir / Alsace, FR / €7

The Rohrer family has been growing wine for eight generations in the Alsace  region, which  is better known for its whites, but global warming has pushed them to branch out, and this young Pinot Noir is juicy, light, chock full of red fruit notes, and definitely worth trying out.

*Pour L'Instant / Bel Air / 100% Syra h / Ventoux, FR / €8

This Côte du Rhône from Mount Ventoux is juicy but powerful, with concentrated tannins and a nice structure. It is the perfect wine for the moment, or for the winter. It is the type of that feels like a slow romance: the more you taste it, the more you like it.

Saboteur Red 2017 / Luddites / Shiraz Blend / Botrivier, ZA / €8

Our brothers from South Africa have been making Luddite wines since 1999 and, as their name would suggest, do it as low-intervention and old-fashioned as possible.
They are famous for their Shiraz, and this Shiraz blend has been aged in French Oak barrels for 18 months, adding just a touch of vanilla to the red fruit, black fruit, and cinnamon tastes you will notice once on the palate.

Orange

*Putes Féministes / Vins et Volailles / Muscat & Gewurtztraminer / Alsace, France / €8,5

From the WTF line of militant cuvées that also includes "Sorières" and "Male Tears," this wine is a collaboration between the Vins et Volailles collective, led by Fleur Godart, and Julien Albertus. Unfiltered, hand-picked, no sulfites added, this aromatic wine has notes of citrus fruit and is as unadorned and defiant as the four naked women on its label.

Rosé

Rosé Brut 2017 / Vaux / Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc & Chardonnay / Rheingau, DE / €7

A sparkling, dry, and refreshing rosé with aromas of wild strawberries from a storied vineyard in Germany that has been producing sparkling wines ("sekt" in German) since 1868. It is simply an unparalleled aperitif.

Sparkling

Barth / Rheingau / 100% Riesling / Baden, DE / €8

Rheingau Rieslings are famous throughout the world, but a sparkling one is quite a rarity and this one, created using the traditional bottle fermentation that is also used for champagne, is a perfect blend of elegance and character.

Rosé Brut 2017 / Vaux / Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc & Chardonnay / Rheingau, DE / €7

*A quick note about natural wines: natural wines are not simply organic. Generally, the term is applied to vineyards who reject today’s sophisticated winemaking technology, and seek to produce wine in the same manner they did a century ago.  This means the yeast they use tends to be wild, sulfites are usually not added, and the vineyard’s environmental impact is minimal.

About Us

Luddites is bookstore, wine bar and a safe haven for people who want to evade the digital world, in pursuit of quietude or Bacchic bliss. Housed in a historic building in the center of Antwerp, we offer the largest selection of English books in the city, as well as a great selection of Dutch books. Hidden just up the stairs is a wine bar where customers can enjoy an exceptional but affordable glass of wine.

Luddites is a project dreamed up by Richard Bolte and Jorien Caers on one dark, stormy night. We think was also the Ides of March or something—but, like, in October of 2018. After more than a year of planning, renovating and deciding we're never ever coming near a can of paint again, Luddites officially opened its doors on the 5th of March 2020.

Pronunciation

Luddites is not a French word and is not pronounced like “crudités.” Luddites believed in Luddism and claimed to be followers of Ned Ludd, a largely fictional character probably based on King Lud of Britain, who was also largely fictional. Thus, it is pronounced luh-daits, just like supporters of King James II’s claim to the throne were called Jacobites (ja-kub-baits).
